Hey folks, Back with another review of my now favourite Magnum boots. Given the adverse weather an simply horrific working conditions i decided my Shields may be a better, more rugged option that my Elite Force WPI's! I have been walking in complete sheets of ice, sometimes running this week and i have not been disappointed. I have remarked before, my feet are always really warm when i wear my Magnum boots, however never to warm and sweaty, the feeling you get with other footwear brands. I have complete confidence in the performance in my Magnum Shields. I feel that even when walking through the crunching snow, my ankles and feet are always going to be supported. Love these boots. Thank you Magnum!! Read Less

Back again folks for another review. I have been really busy. I had the pleasure of wearing my Shield 8.0 WPI boots at a recent exercise. While I had them on, I started to think whether or not my opinions on them had changed after I had worn them a few times. The comfort factor factor still tops my list in relation to what I am looking for in a boot. The Shield gets top marks in this respect because despite it's sturdy feel and rugged nature, still has the comfort rating of a slipper! The job a bit of sitting around, then jumping into action and sometimes I felt as if I was wearing slippers. You can be rest assured that the comfort of these boots is obviously something which Magnum have spent a great deal of time on. I get a lot of comments as well regarding the boots about how sturdy and professional they look. I do keep them polished as best I can give the material that they are made from. As I have said previously, absolutely fantastic boots. I have been wearing them for nearly a year and you would think they are just of the box! Trust me, they have been put through their paces! Buy them, you won't regret it. Thanks, Pete Read Less

I took the bold step, pardon the pun, of breaking in a new pair of Magnum Shield 8.0 WPI by going in at the deep end right away. The second I laced into them I felt the reassuring snugness of this well-made heavy duty boot. I knew then that the fit was right, ankles supported, and instep secure and sole comfortable. Let me describe that days test from a boots point of view. Stood at the briefing, no room to sit as ever, the boots were comfortable, sturdy yet supple enough to allow the gentle rock back and forth which is the secret to getting through a day on your feet. Then a drive to the location, no trouble with the pedals, despite looking rugged the boots are very well proportioned. Short run to the door, foot slammed against the bottom of the door bracing for the hit of the enforcer. The door relents and into the building, floor covered in dirt, chemicals and other nastiness but thanks to the fantastic tread on these boots no slips during a rapid entry. Floor littered in broken glass, screws and nails the deeper in to the building we go. Lots of bending down while bagging plants, no issues with the position of the steel toe cap, all looking good so far. Removing the equipment and a 25.5lbs transformer falls from a wall right on to the toes, no accident book entry needed, just a toe cap wipe on the back of my leg. Heat is 80 degrees plus with high humidity, feeling no adverse effects yet. Back in the van and back for a long sit down typing up the reports. End of the new boots day, how did they cope? I had to think hard about what to write here, in truth while doing the job I hardly noticed my new boots. That’s exactly how it should be in my opinion. If you’re thinking of your boots as you do a job, things can go bad. Since that first days wear these boots have done the same thing a hundred times over and I haven’t noticed them on any occasion, excellent. A lot of thought obviously went in to designing and producing a boot to protect the protectors, happily there was no loss in translation from design to production. Well fitted, very tough indeed, secure and look the part, what more can you ask of a boot? Read Less

I brought a pair of magnums after a very short speed march ripped my feet to shreds when I was wearing standard issue boots. Have worn magnums ever since and have no problems. I have worn the same pair on magnums for 2 nijmegen 100mile marches + training and they are still going strong and are still very comfortable. I use them in the field also and find them very comfortable even after very long periods. An excellent boot. Read Less

So, having been successful in my application to join the Public Order Unit i arrived at 0900 hours on day one of the initial training course to be issued my kit bag, within which i found my new boots - 'Magnum Shield 8.0 WPi' Looking at them for the first time i dind't find anything particularly exciting about them, but who needs good looks when they're built like tanks, as i was due to find out! Regardless of whatever new boot you choose to purchase it is well known that before really putting them to the test 'break' them in - unfortunately, i wasn't afforded this opportunity and after running around for two days my ankles began to feel the strain - i'd like to add that i strongly believe this was not down to poor construction/design of the boot. Throughout the course my colleagues and i were subject to various situations and scenarios, not only testing us, but our new boots too. From petrol reception, to stamping on toes, to maintaining surface grip, i came to the conclusion that the 'Shield 8.0 Wpi' were aptly named as they stood up to the tests presented. Due to the environment these boots were designed for it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone to find that other boot designs are significantly lighter. That said, i didn't feel that i was constantly weighed down by them and i was able to perform well. I would recommend these boots to anyone who would be using them for the purpose they were designed, as having used different styles previously i wouldn't choose them for walking the beat. Magnum describe these boots as, 'The ultimate Riot Control Boot using the most superior materials for maximum protection' - http://www.magnumboots.com/. I'd certainly agree and have every confidence in them that they will hold up to the demanding environment of Public Order incidents. Read Less

These boots sound good on paper but again Magnums seem to be not quite up to scratch. The best way I can describe these boots is as essentially waterproof issue boots. I was not entirely impressed by these bad boys. They seem to offer equivalent support as the issue boot, they weigh more (or seem to) but are that little bit more comfortable. I wore them cutting about the place and on a jaunt to the hills, but I still felt that other boots were better for the money (£100 or there abouts). However, it does have a steel toe cap that withstood me dropping a ammo box onto it, so not entirely bad there. One of the main selling points for the boots is that it is coated with Magnums ion-mask liquid repellent system, which is repellent to both water and blood!! I don’t know where the next war will be, but wherever it is Magnum seem to think there will be a lot of wading through blood… But seriously, I think this could have a utility with our medical types if it works, which I haven’t tested. I also haven’t tested out the claims that it’s fire resistant. One result of this coating is that the outer looks and feels greasy, and doesn’t really hold polish that well until the coating is scraped off, then it’s back to the old boot polish for waterproofing anyway. I scuffed the side of one of these stacking it down some hill, and it did seem fairly durable as only a little amount was scraped off. The boot is laced up in pretty much the same way as the issue boot and does have more than a passing resemblance to the same. Ankle support is not as bad as it could be, but I still had to take it easy on a few parts of the route as to not test it out too thoroughly. It has all sorts of protection certificates but as a mince infanteer I couldn’t make head or tail of it. The fit is generally good, but it feels like all the weight is dangling off the bottom of your foot which is something I haven’t encountered before. I wondered who the target audience of this boot is. I know sappers get Steel toe cap safety boots, and doubt you would be able to wear your own (If I’m incorrect, please shout out). For public order duties these boots would be fairly well suited however. The toe caps would protect you from the obvious, the fire-retardency would be a desirable quality (from someone who got set fire to, accidentally, in trops and lowas I can imagine the bonus of having non-flammable footwear) and the water/blood repellent coating would be useful also with the amount of liquids floating around in your average riot. I felt that in a public-order context the boot really did start to come into its own, the more I thought about it the more I became convinced of its utility. The more comfortable nature of this boot in contrast with the issued one is only going to be of benefit to anyone who spends all day on their feet. With the amount of stamping, shields being whacked down and general chaos the added protection offered by these boots, including the extra padding, is very desirable. Having said this though, it is a case of horses for courses. My role doesn’t really involve much public order, as a very light role infanteer I would want my boots to fulfil more than one very specialist role. For £100 you can get a range of boots for various tasks, but if you’re looking for a slightly gucci-er version of the issue boot – buy an old school pair of Proboots. It’ll be cheaper, more appropriate and probably better for the majority of tasks you will undertake in the green skin. But if you do a lot of this, and are not some Ocdt 2 weeks before Broadsword, then these might be worth the investment. Read Less

Still breaking in my pair of Sheilds, but so far - so good. A lot heavier than the other Magnums I have owned, but the fit is very comfortable, and they are easy to walkin. More later.
