Throughout the three days, over 200 people visited the stand to try on the shoes – and every single one of them said they would have happily bought a pair there and then if they’d been available.  Some of our favourite comments included “tried the HPi and they were divine” and “very comfortable, I didn’t want to take them off”!

Despite one student nurse commenting that they weren’t “dainty” enough, the practical benefits and real-life advantages of the shoe far outweigh any aesthetical shortcomings.  Manufactured from breathable Magnashield leather and highly slip-resistant Hex-Traction sole, the Anti-Slipper HPi also features a neoprene collar for easy on/off, which can also be kicked down allowing the shoe to be worn as a clog/mule.  The extremely comfortable, long-lasting, anti-bacterial memory foam OrthoLite insole and compression moulded EVA midsole offer supreme cushioning and support, for all day comfort during those long shifts.  Furthermore, the entire upper of the shoe is treated with a highly technical ion-mask coating, originally developed by the MOD for chemical warfare defence, which protects against all forms of liquid – from blood to vomit, diarrhoea to urine.

When focussing on the healthcare market, our research has shown that whilst there is an NHS instruction regarding the use of protective clothing, including aprons, gloves, gowns and masks – there is no directive for footwear.  However, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) do provide some “minimum standards” guidance on uniforms and workwear for employers and employees, stating that footwear should be comfortable, non-slip, have enclosed toes and provide support (sandals, clogs or shoes without heel support may not be deemed suitable when undertaking patient handling).  The Department of Health (DoH) also offer some guidance for NHS employers/employees, advising that it is “good practice” to wear soft-soled shoes (which reduce noise in ward) that are closed over the foot and toes, as closed shoes offer protection from spills and dropped objects, and open shoes risk injury or contamination for staff.

Phase 1 of the launch of this new collection took place at the Workwear & Corporate Clothing Show 2011 in Coventry. Since then, the Magnum product team have been working tirelessly to perfect the product, which features the innovative new Magnum slip resistant outsole, Hex-Traction. Now in its 5th year, the Workwear and Corporate Clothing Show raised the bar once more by introducing the Professional Clothing Awards to its 2012 line-up.  This exciting new event combined the show’s prestigious Business Manager Awards with new supplier awards, as well as the SATRA PPE Innovation Awards – creating an ambitious international event.  

As well as incorporated the Business Manager Awards categories for ‘Business Manager of the Year’ and ‘Best Uniform in Corporate Clothing, Workwear and PPE’, the event also introduced a number of new awards for suppliers, ranging from ‘Best Fibre and Fabric Innovation’ and ‘Best Website’ to ‘Best Managed Major Contract’ and ‘Best Managed Boutique Contract’.   Furthermore, to reflect the major growth market of personal protective equipment (PPE), the Professional Clothing Awards contained the brand new SATRA PPE Innovation awards, which recognise the manufacturers of PPE products, components and processes that push boundaries in technical innovation.

The categories took in the whole working garment industry – from products, components and materials to full uniforms and processes – and entries were judged on their practical benefits to the user, the supply chain and the environment.  Entries were judged by a panel of independent experts in January 2012 and the winners of the Professional Clothing Awards were announced at a spectacular gala dinner and dance at the Workwear and Corporate Clothing Show on 17th April 2012, at the IBEX Lounge in Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.

During the six month trial, which is also taking place on board HMS Westminster and HMS Talent, new shirts, trousers and boots will be tested.  Known as the Number 4 uniform, this has traditionally been a light blue shirt and navy coloured trousers.  

Instead, the new combat uniform is all dark blue and comes with various layers to suit all weather conditions - a t-shirt, shirt, thermal fleece and windproof smock.  It also includes a belt and a new pair of MAGNUM Stealth Force 8.0 SZ CT CP WPi boots, which feature a convenient side-zip. Following on from the success of the Magnum Strider shoe, next week sees the launch of the Magnum Strider boot, manufactured by Magnum for exclusive retail by Keltic.
