What is Healthcare Footwear?

Although there is an NHS instruction for nurses regarding protective clothing, including aprons, gloves, gowns and masks – there is no directive for footwear. The Royal College of Nursing do provide nurses with some ‘minimum standards’ guidance, stating that footwear should be: comfortable, non-slip and provide support. The Department of Health also offer some guidance advising that it is ‘good practice’ to wear quieter, soft-soled shoes that are closed over the toes. This protects your feet from spills and dropped objects, reducing the risk of injury or contamination.

Fit for purpose healthcare footwear should therefore have a highly slip resistant outsole designed to cope with the potentially slippery surfaces found in hospitals. It should also be hardwearing but instantly comfortable for long shifts, protective against hazards such as blood, urine and vomit, as well as needle sticks and dropped implements. Where required, footwear should also feature toe caps to provide protection against trolleys and other apparatus.

Why Magnum Healthcare Footwear?

In 2013, Magnum worked with UK nurses to design a shoe, the Armadillo, which met the requirements and good practice standards for nursing footwear, while remaining incredibly comfortable on long shifts. The Armadillo nurses shoe proved hugely popular and gave Magnum an insight into what nurses and other healthcare professionals want for their feet.

Following the success of the Armadillo shoe, Magnum has worked hard to develop a new range of healthcare footwear with further improved features and benefits. The new Magnum Healthcare Collection features an anti-slip Pentagrip outsole that not only meets, but exceeds the required co-efficient of friction for the European SRC slip resistance test in accordance with both EN ISO 20347:2012 for occupational footwear and EN 20345:2011 for safety footwear.

The collection also features a moulded EVA & mesh insole and EVA midsole which provides supreme underfoot cushioning and impact resisting properties for all-day comfort. In addition, our exclusive i-shield technology provides an invisible guard on the upper which delivers ultimate protection against liquids and dirt, repelling fluids and blood borne pathogens, and preventing stains.
