I have been using the Spider Elite 8.0 for the last year so thought that the Urban 8.1 would be a step forward which to a degree they are but in some ways are not. First let me begin by saying I love the look off these boots. They look different to the standard patrol boot most officers wear so it's good to stand out from the crowd. I recently reviewed my Elite 8.0 and mentioned that the lacing system was not the best with the boots coming undone despite being laced tightly. It seems Magnum used the feedback from the Elite 8.0 and responded. The lacing system seems to be a lot easier on both doing up and undoing which makes taking off the boots an easier task now. In the lace is a pouch which allows you to tuck the laces in once done up but in truth I think it a bit of a gimmick but could see how you might want to use it if you had your boots tucked in to your trousers. The laces are quite abrasive on your hand and I recall one reviewer stating that it aggravate a skin condition. I can see how this could happen and if you are like me and like your boots done up very tightly then it feels like you are using a cheese wire sometimes to lace your boots with. Well the look of the boot once on os completely different to the Elite Spider 8.0 and took me a day or two before they grew on me. The leather took slightly longer than the Elite Spider 8.0 to break in and my foot rubbed slightly for the first day which nearly made me send the boots back as I had a well broken in pair of Spider Elite's sitting in my locker which felt like slippers! I carried on wearing them and the following shift the boots softened and the pain went away. They actually felt comfortable and as good as my Spider Elite 8.0 boots. I liked the bigger toe cap on these boots which means the leather on the toe cap will not get as punishment as usual. The boots have been tested on foot patrol, driving response and standing on static post for long period and so far I have not had any discomfort issues. The sole is no longer a Vibram which I feel is a bit of a mistake on Magnum's part as on previous boots Vibram is a god send. The sole whilst it look durable is possible too hard now. The is a foam mid sole which offers good cushioning but just not as good as the Vibram so a point off there Magnum. The boots offer excellent support in the ankle area and whilst not waterproof I would sacrifice waterproofing any day for weight advantage. I stood in the rain for an extended period the other day and to be honest considering they are not marketed as a waterproof boot my socks were stil dry when I ended my shift so good work there. The grip is also excellent in the wet so despite my gripe about the sole being harder it does seem to grip in slippery conditions. One thing that is really bugging me, is this boot lighter than the Spider Elite 8.0? I have not weighed them both yet but will post when I have with the results. I suspect that they are slightly heavier but not by any noticeable amount. I have been wearing these boots now for a month and am impressed again with Magnum's efforts to produce good quality boots that do not cost the earth. These boots take a coat of polish well too and only took me 20 mins from new to bull up the toes. It is good to see Magnum are committed to pushing themselves further to create a boot which makes our lives so much easier in the field so well done Magnum!
